The direct English translation of this Cuban idiom is “you broke the chain”. Used to refer to when someone has really fumbled a situation and made some mistakes. I’m interested in this juxtaposition of the English understanding as setting oneself free and ending a cycle or form of bondage and the Spanish understanding that acknowledges mistakes were made. Drawing the lines between the reconciliation one’s imperfections and allowing that to fuel growth.
